Singer and actress Aaliyah passed away in 2001 at the age of 22. She was poised, mysterious and had a unique tomboy style in an era of crop tops and slip dresses. She only completed three studio albums, but the industry never stopped being inspired by her. And now, so many rappers and singers keep sampling her. According to WhoSampled.com, it’s happened 192 times. Here’s a brief list of some of the samplers:
And brands are still tapping into her legacy too. Blogs have been buzzing about the MAC x Aaliyah Collection, which strangely started with a Change.org petition from an avid fan named Jennifer Risinger in 2015. It reached over 25,000 supporters. The collection will include nude lipsticks and an eye shadow palette. It will be online on June 20 and in stores on June 21.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the lesser known Melt Cosmetics is also launching a “Baby Girl” collection, based on Aaliyah’s nickname. Since MAC has been promoting their collaboration for the past year, it could detract from the simultaneously launching line from Melt. But with a growing fan base and online reality show Lipstick Empire, Co-founders Lora Arellano and Dana Boma have a plethora of channels to promote their line as well. The capsule collection will include five stackable eye shadow shades inspired by the cover art of Aaliyah’s final namesake album. They were released on March 23.
