Here’s How We’re Preparing Our Skin For The Winter

As warmer weather fades into frigid temperatures and low humidity, it is essential to not only update your wardrobe but to switch up your skincare routine. Our skin craves consistency, so when factors like temperature and the elements around us shift, our body becomes shocked and reacts differently. 

In warmer months, Our skin’s barrier naturally seals moisture in projects against irritants. The winter’s harsh winds and dry air can not only weaken our natural barrier but strip moisture from the skin. This change not only causes more dehydrated skin but skin more prone to redness and irritation, hence the need to pay special attention to moisturizing during the winter season. 

Wind and dry air aren’t the only factors affecting our skin. During the winter, as we attempt to heat up, hot air and temperature fluctuations can dry skin out, causing even more irritation.

Be wary of grey skies and thick materials during the winter too. Don’t forget to use sunscreen even when it’s dull outside, as well as looking out for materials like wool and rough clothing that can irritate the skin. And for those braving through cold, wet days or for skiers and snowboarders change out of wet clothes immediately. Wearing wet clothes and shoes can further irritate your skin and cause unwanted itchiness.

Make sure your cleanser is boosting your skin’s moisture and hydration.

A great moisturizer is useless if your cleanser isn’t doing the work too. We’ve already established the need for moisture during the winter, so why not incorporate throughout your routine? If you’re using a foaming cleanser or gel cleanser/soap switch to a cleanser with a creamer base, they don’t tend to dry out the skin and contains humectants that will leave your skin feeling hydrated. Try the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser ($13) or the Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser ($34). 

One word: sunscreen

Dark skies and overcasts have many of us skipping sunscreen during the fall in winter, but; the myth that there is less sun in winter is untrue. The dryness and irritation stemming from colder temperatures and harsh winds allow for UV rays to have a better shot at your skin. Wearing sunscreen on exposed skin, especially when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will keep you protected. On the economic side, try Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen ($9) or if you’re in the mood to splurge Julep No Excuses Invisible Sunscreen Gel SPF 40 ($28)

Swap astringent for a toner. 

It’s a no brainer than witch hazel or any other popular astringent not only removes built-up dirt but dries out the skin. There’s no need to do double damage during colder months, so switch to hydrating toner. They balance the skin, strengthen the skin’s barrier, and provide hydration. Applying before your moisturizer will also improve absorption and overall radiance. FRESH’s Rose Deep Hydration Toner ($25) is a cult favorite. 

Invest in a Humidifier

Using a humidifier in your home or workspace adds moisture to the dry winter air, especially for those blasting the heat, and will keep your skin hydrated and help clear up your sinuses. Try the VicTsing Essential Oil Diffuser and Cool Mist Humidifier ($30)

Switch up your shower routine

Long and steamy showers are tempting during the winter, but your skin hates it. Water washes natural oils away, and excessively hot water also dehydrates the skin. Try a 5- to 10-minute lukewarm shower (or bath), which reduces redness, and colder water is less irritating to the surface. And when you hop out the shower, be prepared with a full-body moisturizer like raw shea butter ($11) or Ouai Body Crème ($38)

Last but not least, your lips

Always carry a lip balm during winter months. For many of us, cold weather brings with it dry, chapped, or painfully cracked lips, and a proper lotion or salve can help. Try to exfoliate your lips by gently rubbing them with a wet washcloth or clean, soft toothbrush to remove dry skin. Stay away from matte formulas in lip products that can dry out lips too.
