(for real, i’m not birthing a silly princess obsessed girl). this is one of my favorite movies of all-time. spike lee, always gets it right. the star of this film is such an inspiration to me…LADYBUG! she reminds me of myself – being a little girl in the hood and having to be tough all the time. even her brothers in the movie were true to form…man, my brother must have mushed me in the head a million times. where is she now?!
i used her as inspiration for this VIOLETTE commercial:

The last thing I heard about Zelda, the actress that plays Troy is that she graduated from Princeton University. A friend of mines went to Princeton with her and I got to meet her when I went to a Black Arts Conference at Yale a few years ago and Spike Lee was the guest speaker. She had went up to him before he spoke (he didn’t know she was there) and then after he pointed her out to the audience. He stated that she made him feel like an old man since Crooklyn was filmed over 10 years ago and Zelda was like 9 at the time.

Love Crooklyn. I play it whenever people come over and want to watch something. But you totally missed the part when the boys threw the cat at the girls!

This was perhaps my favorite Spike Lee joint. My grandfather had passed away the summer before and it was crazy to watch her go through what I was going through. It wasn’t fully cathartic but it helped me cope a little. I love that the movie showed a real family going through real ish with class and a sense of dignity. One two three the devil’s after me…
