every sunday i would watch my neighbor friend KRYSTAL get her hair done by her mom in her living room as we watched BET. she would scratch out her scalp, wash it, braid it and then take a hot comb to it. i remember staring at that massive metal comb, sitting on the stove getting hot and toasty. i asked her mom to put it in my hair, because all i wanted was a perm and a hot comb in my hair since all the girls in school and my neighborhood had it. she laughed and said “girl your hair would fall out”.
it didn’t help that this commercial played constantly, starring adorable brown girls with perfectly coiffed hair and neon colored clothing. i eventually settled for LUSTERS PINK LOTION that left a pink residue on my scalp and weighed my hair down to look like a JHERI CURL!

Ah! This brings back memories for me, too. My mom used to use the Just for Me detangler on my hair. Every Thursday before dance practice I’d watch Zoom on PBS and I wanted my hair curly just like the girl on the show so she’d spray with the detangler and I’d spray my doll’s hair, too, ha.

awww this brought back too many memories!! My mom wouldn’t let me get a perm as a child so I had to settle for the hot comb. I also had to use the detangler and the hairdress. To this day, I thank her for not putting one in my hair as a young girl, I still don’t have one!

LOLLLL! OMG so many memories! I never saw these commercials. Was I not black enough? How in the hell did this miss my younger years? I didn’t even know this had a commercial. Anywhoo…I had that TAPE tho! You know, the one that came with the perm…? I played the HELL outta it! That was my song! Just for meeeeeeee!
