i missed ROCK THE BELLS despite the super off the hook line up. i’m just not an outdoor festival kind of gal and slept on asking people for tickets.
oh well. SATURDAY night we celebrated in style. AJ CALLOWAY was also there celebrating his borthday…CHRIS ROCK, RZA, BOKEEM WOODBINE and more were in the building.

it’s been so long since i did a party-party at SANTOS, it was like DE JA VU.

*THE BLACK SNOWBALL – a term coined by ELLE CLAY which describes the hairstyle of when a black girl balls up her own hair and not a hair piece into a make-shift bun to create a comfortable and casual look. it’s a look that white girls are commonly known for, but in the black community is not usually deemed fashionable or cute.

life: BLOODY MARY’S, OYSTERS and ALBUM LISTENING FOR FAR EAST MOVEMENT (8.26.10)
on thursday, we celebrated GREG KUBIE’s new job over BLOODY MARY’s and OYSTERS at CITY CRAB’s HAPPY HOUR. it was my first HAPPY HOUR ever and basically it just means a certain portion of the menu and cocktails are half off (which is awesome).
i bloody love a BLOODY MARY! blimey, bullocks and god save the queen. i’m particular about them also, i like super spicy ones and CITY CRAB has an amazing one.
CONGRATS to GREG!

*MUSSELS rule too.

life: 1992 FOUR-YEAR ANNIVERSARY AT CV RIVINGTON x DJ SOUL x DJ STRETCH ARMSTRONG
oh my gosh. i can’t believe my baby is turning FO’ YEARS OLD! 1992 the party turned 4 years old this year and we celebrated the right way with DJ SOUL (one of the original DJ’s) at CV RIVINGTON.
i can remember the moment of conception. OSCAR and i sitting on a NOLITA bench late one night, doing what we do best – gabbing and collaborating creatively on ideas. we were rambling on about how wack parties had become in the city. whether it was an album release party for a big record label. streetwear brand or a fashion week party, they were all the same. they all gave the same energy of those condescending questions, “who are you?” “what are you wearing?” and “who do you know?”. we knew most of these people putting these parties on and even though we were invited, we could see how other people could feel inferior.
we wanted to create a space where all kinds of people would come and dance, have a great time and feel welcomed. what kind of music would we play? without question, it would be music from the era that still haunted OSCAR and i – the late 80′s/early 90′s. then OSCAR said, “1992″ and she was born – baby hair pumping with a blow pop to boot!
in 2006, there were no parties dedicated to playing music from that era. it was before the “RETRO” craze when OSCAR was the only one i knew wearing CAZAL and MCM. now – they’re a dime a dozen, but as JOHNNY OSBOURNE said: “its the only 90′s party that matters”! BULLET.

throwback: TLC – “What About Your Friends”
TLC was such the muse. i can remember on HALLOWEEN in my CATHOLIC middle school, getting dressed up as our favorite singers and groups. i believe me and LA’KEA and another friend (i cannot remember at the moment) dressing up as TLC. i was CHILI, of course…not like i had a choice in the matter and not like i didn’t want to impersonate her for the day either.
i remember bringing condoms for our “costumes” (of oversized LEVI “UNBUTTON MY FLY” tees and bright colored denim shorts), since TLC was all about safe-sex and me being the rebel and perfectionist at such an early age i decided it was only fit for us to wear them like they did (pinned to their t-shirts). where did i find these condoms? oh the neighborhood bodega of course. that’s where we picked up our quarter waters and cool ranch DORITOS to eat on the way to school, early in the morning.
i remember proudly showing the school counselor who was more than liberal, MR. STEPHEN DUFFY. students could talk to him about any subject and he would listen without judgement. when i told him proudly what i brought to school, he (with a million questions) eventually asked me to hand it over.
at the time, i didn’t get what the big deal was at that moment…especially having a one pregnant middle school girl in our midst. i thought at least he would appreciate my intelligence in the matter. no dice.
anyways, heres the video.
funny: HOOD BY AIR TV – RAUL AND SHAYNE INTERVIEWING…
in 2007, while kee-keeing as usual with the family RAUL and SHAYNE – i decided to record them being as hilarious as they usually are.
oh – how i miss the good old days of these lovely characters teaching me runway walks down my hallway and showing me how to give looks.
