THROWBACK: Janet Jackson feat. Q-TIP – “Got Til It’s Gone” (Dir. Mark Romanek)

Everything about this track and video is perfection!

SOME TRIVIA…via WIKIPEDIA
*The beat is sampled from Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” (see video below)

*Everyone told Janet (Miss Jackson if you’re nasty) that Joni Mitchell wouldn’t approve the sample, so Janet called her personally and played the song for her. Days later, Joni said Yes!

*While Joni Mitchell was on tour in 1998, she added elements of Q-TIP’s rap into her performance of “Big Yellow Taxi” (Wow).

*Although the track is credited to Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson – hip hop collective The Ummah (composed of Q-Tip, J Dilla, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) state they actually produced the track…(which I definitely believe *staring at my nails).

*The video for “Got Til It’s Gone” was directed by one of my all-time favorite directors, Mark Romanek. The video is inspired by
the amazing portraiture work of Malick Sidibé and tells the story of South Africans having a good time in the 60′s/70′s during Apartheid.
