I’m really liking this new video by Lupe. It’s started a bit of controversy due to a character in the video with a pink wig. I didn’t get any sense that he was making connections between the antagonist and a famous pink haired hip hop princess whatsoever. In fact, the idea that he might be drawing connections to any person in particular completely escaped my mind.
I think the video speaks for itself and it follows the lyrics perfectly, discussing how a “just a word” can influence and distort one’s perception of self and/or others.
I think this song and video is worth discussing. I personally believe that although words are “just words”, they hold feelings and various interpretations despite original intention. I like to think liberally – that people should express themselves however they see fit as long as it doesn’t hurt others, but sometimes expressing yourself can indirectly negatively influence others. Its always important to be careful what you say and how you say it, especially when very young people are in the equation. In general, it’s important to think about everything we do and how it impacts the world…ie: littering, etc.
I think the point is, just because we are free to do as we please…we must always consider how the world will interpret it. As much as it may not be our problem, it actually is. It effects others…whether its your fanbase or your child at home.
What do you guys think of the video?
What are your views on the word “BITCH” or other words that hold negative connotations?

Not a Lupe fan, but I really appreciated the video. I just wish other rappers/hip hop artists would be more responsible with their words.
I hate that many of us have become so comfortable with the use of such words. I think we like to use them freely and claim ownership, but the second it’s used in the wrong way we want to have a problem with it. The truth is that there is no responsible way to use these words.
But…I fear this is a wasted rant. *shrugs* #noonecares

I think this video and song are dope! Lupe has a few of these gems “Dumb it down” “Hip hop saved my life”, etc and i’ve always loved that to him its not solely about putting rhyming words together for a check. His heart is in what he does and he truly offers service and a sense of value. That being said its good to see that some hip hop artists are at least trying to take accountability for the words coming outta their mouths. It seems everyone want to spit hot shit but as soon as something starts to cause a stink NO ONE wants to take responsibility. (See Meek Mills Amen). I mean thats what rappers are..Wordsmiths! Hows a wordsmith not trying own his/her words? ……

I just think the issue is a lot bigger than a word. I think it’s perilous to put importance on the word when there are a lot more social, economic and consumer based ideologies that structure our society. Therefore words are merely just a fragment in the ideas young girls have about how they should be and what they place importance on.
