Balenciaga Debuts Fall 2018 Collection Look-book

In recent years, Balenciaga has proved to be fashion’s hottest brand  and they sure do live up to the hype. The house is well known for creating avant-garde structural pieces, straddling the edge of fashion and forecasting the future of women’s ready-to-wear looks. Several designers who worked for Balenciaga would go on to open their own successful couture houses, notably Oscar de la Renta, Andre Courreges, Emanuel Ungaro, and Hubert de Givenchy.

The latest contribution from Balenciaga is all about clashing. Bold patterns and textures, classic menswear elements with womenswear, oversized silhouettes with slimmer shapes, and street/office wear stapled with a touch of haute couture. In this collection we see the fusing of garments, turning a pile of things into one solid piece. You’ll find a plaid shirt being sewn onto a silk dress, men’s short-sleeved shirts with printed sleeves fused onto them, a black jean jacket and a quilted country jacket mated with a black-and-white plaid blanket, completed with a fringe. Other Balenciaga interventions include the curved, reflective piping on the tweed coat (an idea borrowed from wet-weather motorcycle-riding kits) and the highly recognizable floral “pantaboots.”

Though this is Balenciaga’s official womenswear lookbook, the garments are mostly unisex. Notable pieces such as the oversized outerwear, plaid shirts, and anoraks have been seen on both male and female models during the collection’s runway show and is clearly an explicit choice made by the fashion house to destroy gender norms.
