Seriously, Ebony Magazine has given a girl more love in the last year than she could ever have wished for during a lifetime. Special thanks to Ebony Mag and Writer Damonica Boone for supporting a fellow sistren (again). Peep all of my Beauty Secrets HERE. Or down below!
Vashtie Kola is a director, DJ, artist, designer and style icon. With so many titles under her belt, we can’t help but wonder how the Trinidadian beauty has the time to look so flawless. Lucky for us, she decided to spill her beauty secrets, as she shared go-to products for her skin, hair, and makeup, as well as how she keeps her curls healthy and under control during the winter.
“My go-to products for everything are always health-conscious, non-carcinogenic, vegan and cruelty free,” she says, “things that are important to me since I keep a vegan/raw diet and am a huge animal lover. I like to utilize the site www.ewg.org/skindeep to find out which products are good for you. Because keeping healthy on the inside is just as important as staying beautiful on the outside.”

On Hair Care
“For hair, I use Hugo & Debra Naturals Smooth and Defining Shampoo and Conditioner in Coconut. My family is from Trinidad, and coconut-scented anything always wins my island heart. For styling, I use Beautiful Curls Leave-In Conditioner for Wavy to Curly Hair. I love it because it keeps my curls looking shiny and healthy.”
On Skin Care
“For skin, I wash with Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castille Soap. I like the added chill the peppermint gives my skin. Makes me feel extra clean. I moisturize with Almond Oil by Now Foods, which keeps my ashiness in check. And anyone who knows me, knows I need that.
“For my face, I wash with Dr. Alkaitis Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser. Dr. Alkaitis is an organic and raw line of skincare that I am obsessed with, so clean and simple, you could eat it. If we are what we wear (and eat) then that is a relief. I follow with Luzern Laboratories Vita-O2 Glacial Toner and their Serum Absolut Radiance Skin Brightening Serum. This serum is hydroquinone-free and perfect for the woes of brown skin suffering from hyper-pigmentation.
“For around the eye, I use Dr. Alkaitis Organic Eye Creme and then finish with Dr. Alkaitis Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil during the day. At night, I will switch to Luzern Laboratories Force De Vie Pure Oxygen Creme Lux. I love Luzern Laboratories because, as well as being organic and free of toxins, it is also focused on anti-aging. And who couldn’t use a little of that?
“For my weekly masks, I use Dr. Alkaitis Organic Enzyme Exfoliating Mask followed by their Organic Cellular Repair Mask. They are amazing because they repair and exfoliate the skin using their basic ingredients of fruit and oats. One of the masks literally looks like a blueberry concoction on the face: beautifully purple and blue. I finish with Luzern Laboratories System O2 Infuse Mask, which leaves my face feeling clean, fresh and supple.”
On Her Favorite Makeup Products
“For makeup, I like to keep it simple. I use a powder foundation by Afterglow Cosmetics in the color Fawn. I smudge a little black eyeliner by Rejuva Minerals, and my under eye concealer is #44 by RMS Beauty. For lips, I keep them moist thanks to RMS Beauty Lip and Skin Balm in Simply Vanilla. I love these lines of makeup, because I believe whatever you put on your skin should nourish it, and all their ingredients are clean and healthy.”
On Keeping Her Curls Healthy in Harsh Weather
“The winter can take its toll on hair and skin, so to preserve my curls I do homemade hair masks. I keep it simple with an olive oil and coconut oil mask. Beauty blogger Michelle Phan has a great recipe.”
PRESS: FootWear News (Cover Story) – “Kick Starters” featuring Vashtie, DJ Clark Kent, Bobbito, Ronnie Fieg and Jeff Staple – Written by Gerald Flores
Special thanks to Gerald Flores and FootWear News for giving me the honor of gracing their cover with legends; DJ Clark Kent, Bobbito, Ronnie Fieg and Jeff Staple. So far, it’s the top story on WWD.Com…please Margiela or Alexander Wang don’t make any announcements or debuts today – hahaha.
This is my second cover (but, this is the first I’ve shared so far), the first being a solo cover shot on the cover of Maco’s (a Trinidadian magazine) September issue.
Here are some behind the scenes shots of the shoot. It was pretty funny. At first, they staged me on the floor – laying on my side like a Vogue cover. It was a nice idea, but it was so not me…and amongst the guys, it made me look silly.
Finally, the photographer asked me to get to the top of the ladder and voila! Here it is. Shooting with these legends (and also friends) was amazing…and hilarious.
Birthday Card by B. Denise in 2011 (you be knowing me, B. Denise
This is dedicated to all my readers who know how much this meeting means to me. I may have joked HERE and THERE about kidnapping and other innocent things in jest, but on a serious note – it was really refreshing to meet such an incredible artist like Archy! He blew me away and I hope you enjoy this episode! ALL THANKS goes to his highness JOSH MADDEN for not only introducing Zoo Kid’s (aka King Krule) music to me, but for eventually introducing King Krule aka Archy to me…IN REAL LIFE.

INTERVIEW: 11 NYC Tastemakers Dish on Their Go-To Male Grooming Spots x Written By Vashtie for Complex (Presented By Gillette)
Since I was a young girl, I’ve been intrigued by the male species. Aside from the obvious attraction, I was more fascinated by their masculinity, style, interests and mannerisms. Now that I’ve graduated to adulthood, that fascination has expanded into grooming. How a man grooms his facial hair, why he decides on a beard vs a clean shaven face or where he goes for general maintenance is intriguing. A guy can look one way for Spring with a mustache and look totally different for Winter with a beard.
Grooming also begins to divide the boys from the men and women who are equally involved in their own personal grooming find this aspect very attractive.
I asked 11 of of my guy friends (including: A-Trak, Victor Cruz, Steve Nash, Jonathan Mannion, Josh Madden, Nigel Sylvester and more!) where they go for male grooming and here’s what they told me…

The nice folks at Gillette asked me what I look for in a guy, even more what I look for in his grooming. Check out what I had to say in this VIDEOÂ and if you are a “fella”, enter to win the sweepstake to win $500 towards a Style Upgrade.
Look, I already filled out the below…
INTERVIEW: Ebony Magazine x Leaders Of The New Cool x Vashtie “The Tomboy Temptress” x September Issue
I’m overjoyed at being featured in Ebony Magazine’s Style/Influencers Section, written by Ericka Goodman. They let me be me and used my interview answers perfectly! My write-up is extremely kind and I’m obsessing over the title Miss Goodman gave me of “Tomboy Temptress” – owwwww! I am also extremely honored to be featured in such a historic and important September issue that features the 4 cover tribute to Trayvon Martin.
Don’t you just love Complex and their many lists! Matthew Henson of Complex reached out and asked me to comment on things that men wear that I don’t like. I actually needed no time to respond, as I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Let me also point out, when these trends first started happening it was cute – but, now it’s really exhausted. As always, I am no expert, this is just my opinion. You can also read comments from my lovely lady friends; Deirdre Maloney, Natalie Levy, Rose Garcia, Cynthia Lu & More!
