on a (too early) saturday morning, we met outside of 21 MERCER. myself, OSCAR, DEE & RICKY, JESSIE BOYKINS III, CHAD GITTENS, SNEAKER JOHN, SCOTT WILLIAMS aka YOUNG SCOOZLE, SWINTON, (just to name a few) and more were about to embark into the BOOGIE DOWN BRONX for some training.
STICK BALL training.
not sure if you all are familiar with this sport, that finds it’s origins in NEW YORK CITY from about the 1920′s/1930′s, where poor young men would steal mop handles off fire escapes and shorten them using manhole covers to play a game similar to that of baseball.
*TRAILER FOR “BRAGGING RIGHTS” (stickball doc)
it’s much harder than it looks folks.
*my mini speakers makes any trip fun!
*OSCAR and SCOTT WILLIAMS aka YOUNG SCOOZLE
*this is straight heaven. even though that rag that covers the ice is suspect.
*shortening FUTURA made sticks!
*filing down our broken sticks
*STICKBALL BLVD/STEVE MERCADO BLVD (STEVE was one of the people that held the game alive. he was a dedicated father, husband and firefighter who perished at the WTC. he’s featured in the doc, it’s an amazing story!)
*practice makes perfect
***you can’t play STICKBALL with non stick-playing dudes…it was “PAUSE/NO HOMO” CITY. “can you grab my stick – pause”. oy vey.
easter sunday morning, i rolled over to where AMAYA was staying at the crack of dawn…8:00am. i was up by 6:00 am. eeek, i forgot how morning looked that early in the morning (not cute).
we had decided on FILIPINO BREAKFAST, but somehow it changed to TRINIDADIAN BREAKFAST (which seems about the same, since they both utilize some kind of fish).
after my bestie AMAYA woke up and peeped her EASTER BASKET full of cute educational books from other cultures (not just CAT IN THE HAT, which is awesome too), baby chopsticks, candy and clothes — we were off to ALLENS for some SALTFISH and BAKE and NIOS for some DOUBLES.
*my friends and i have a great sense of inappropriate humor. everything and anything is a laugh for us, no matter what

life: SCREENING OF “BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK” DOC AT MOMA with VERONICA WEBB, RACHEL ROY AND JUNE AMBROSE (3/24/10)
last night i was invited by legendary VERONICA WEBB and friends RACHEL ROY and JUNE AMBROSE to watch a screening of legendary fashion photographer and NEW YORK CITY icon – BILL CUNNINGHAM.
the film is brilliant! it documents BILL’s life and his incredible infectious spirit. at 81 years old he is still the hardest working and most honest photo journalist around.
WINTOUR, who is among the fashion folks featured notes: “Just seeing Mr. Cunningham not raise camera to eye is enough to strike dread into the heart of a fashion editor”
at one point in the film when CUNNINGHAM is in PARIS for fashion week, there was a paparazzi frenzy over CATHERINE DENEUVE was leaving a show. BILL didn’t shoot once. when asked why he responded with ease – “She wasn’t wearing anything interestingâ€.
with no interest for celebrity shots, he ALWAYS ONLY goes for fashion. be it a nameless club kid, a delivery man or ANNA WINTOUR – his camera only snaps for fashion.
the film not only paints an interesting portrait of this private and true artist, it also gives a bit of history regarding NEW YORK and PARIS. how DETAILS magazine was founded in the early 80′s and how fashion shows (years ago) never had a photographers or eager designers attempting to steal styles in their midst.
just his dedication to his work inspired me. he talks about how once you get a pay check for your work it ruins your creative vision, you don’t have control over it. how when he goes to events to photograph he doesn’t look at the guest list, he goes to find fashion…and he doesn’t eat or “wine and dine” as he calls it (not even water), because he is there for work. BRILLIANT!!!
i highly suggest watching this film. especially to fellow artists.
my photos from last night…
