This brings me back to the Summer of 3rd grade, to a certain night when I made some interesting discoveries. I can remember it clearly. The front door was ajar to alleviate the Summer heat in our apartment and my mother had braided my hair into plaits to keep my neck cool. This was the night when I first heard a style of wild music playing on our living room stereo and I found my brother dancing in strange patterns. I ran out to the hallway to catch a better glimpse. My brother (8 years my senior), annoyed by my young presence, stopped altogether. I asked him “what are you doing?” He replied with a bit of cool upper-handedness and a lot of side eye, “voguing”. Eventually he resumed the dance and I stood there, watching in fascination. I was dying to know what music he was playing, but knew I had to play it just as cool so not to irk him more than he already was. Later, he removed his tape from the deck and played another one. I grabbed the tape and saw it was a recorded cassette. When I read the name I giggled in confusion. “HOUSE MIX?!”. My tender age could not understand why it was called “House”, but I was thoroughly intrigued and excited by it all. I had loads of questions, but limited myself to one. “Where did you get this?”. Mid dance, he uttered with ultimate ease as if I already should have known before opening my fetal mouth, “The City”. Even at that age, I said to myself “Of course!”
