GUESS has been known for their iconic advertisements for a while now. this campaign was especially great, because it featured a young and rebellious DREW donning the early 90′s styled thinned brows and lined lips. considering everything this woman has been through coming from a famous family and being a hugh child star, the fact that she hasn’t shaved her head or leaked a sex tape is worth commemorating. she’s talented and accomplished!

oh my. DEEE-LITES music makes me so happy. it brings me this feeling of NEW YORK CITY circa 1990…fresh, cool, dangerous, and creative. the years my older brother would travel 2 hours from ALBANY to go to raves and parties where club kids lived. he’d come back and tell me stories and play mixtapes of the illest house music. i love this city now, but that era (pre-starbucks and high rises in the LES) seems LARGER THAN LIFE.

we are in strange times right now. times when a “musician” can become a “creative super star” with the help of a power team (stylist, choreographer, trainer, publicist, etc). when i was growing up, we had ARTISTS who were CREATIVE and made STATEMENTS. people who were interesting and different before their record deal.

his music finds it’s way inside, pleasantly burrowing in between my hidden self-loathing and general apathy. the album XO kept my head above water during a blue period in art school. i saw him perform in ALBANY circa 2001 at a free show. it was magic.
his life ended far too soon. RIP

GIL SCOTT HERON…makes me think of days when i stumbled upon great music at record stores and through conversations with music loving friends as a teenager. the same time when we were questioning government, history books, god and man. we were young, broke and full of dreams. years have passed, but those days still feel like the most spectacular. GIL SCOTT brings me back to that feeling.

if i had the opportunity to kidnap anyone in the world and force them to make a comeback album, it might be miss LAURYN. i know, a lot of us judged her during that MTV UNPLUGGED…but, i was impressed by her vulnerability. so many musicians these days keep their emotions (if any) on lock, it’s nice to see humanity every now and again.

oh man…i am stuck in the 90′s. i was such a fan of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. these songs bring back such great memories. i remember pre-internet spending my days as a youngster perusing music and fashion magazines and lingering in record stores just learning about music and culture.
