support: HAROLD HUNTER RUN 2010 (5/2/10)
(keeping your spirit alive homie. i still bump “ditty bop” every now and again)

+++++
Its round that time of year when the NYC community comes together for their beloved friend Harold Hunter.
The Harold Hunter Run is a fundraising event that raises money for the Harold Hunter Foundation. Its a community driven occasion that allows people from all corners to enjoy a lite run in honor of a friend, while raising money for a great cause. The mission of the Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF) is to provide inner-city youth with valuable life experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth by encouraging and sponsoring their interest in skateboarding.
The HHF seeks to provide young people with assistance in pursuing their interest in skateboarding through mentorship, support and sponsorship geared towards nurturing their talent, individual creativity, resourcefulness and life skills. To that end, the HHF will help inner-city youth obtain scholarships to action sports camps, participate in local and regional skateboarding clinics and contests, connect them with potential sponsors, and provide professional mentorship and support.

support: FRESH AIR FUND NEEDS HOSTS (or donations) @freshairfund
it’s true that our life experiences shape us. many factors have made me who i am today and i hold major emphasis on being exposed to life outside of the hood as a kid.
getting a scholarship to an all girl college preparatory high school not only text book educated me, it also opened up a world i hadn’t previously experienced. i learned about things like…
-the band PHISH
-people who live in houses don’t use their front doors or keys, they have garage doors and codes
-hiking is just a brisk walk
-lobster bisque and sushi
-not all washers and dryers have coin slots
-country clubs and tanning huts
-garbage disposals (my favorite)
-skiing isn’t only for certain folks
i know that all sounds like a joke, but i’m serious. my family started out in a 2 bedroom apartment with 5 of us cramped in it. corner stores crowded my concrete playground, with used condoms on the street and trash everywhere. my parents did the best they could with what knowledge they had, but you can imagine that being able to see life outside of what i knew was priceless.
to have sleepovers in the suburbs, swimming in pools behind houses and not dirty public ones, eating artichoke hearts and drinking fresh squeezed orange juice, having sit down dinners with family…i have so many great memories.
i never participated in the FRESH AIR FUND but it seems like it would offer similar and new experiences that would help expand a childs mind. to at least be able to enjoy warm weather and do fun activities that leave grass stains on your clothes and etch the memory of an amazing summer on the brain is what all kids deserve.
if you or anyone you know can be a host for a kid in need, go to FRESH AIR FUND HOSTS…
they also accept donations. think of it as helping contribute to a better world for you and your family with less mean and crazy people.
