Charli XCX and British producer Mura Masa are back with a new video for their single “1 Night.” The song, which debuted earlier this month, is off of Charli’s newly released mixtape, Number 1 Angel.
Mura Masa told BBC in a recent interview, “I think with a song like that and with someone like Charli, it was important to me not to make just another pop song. It had to be a little bit more interesting. I think hopefully this achieves a little bit of both worlds, like something from her world and something from my world.”
The video was certainly interesting. It depicted the relationships between several couples living within an ordinary, urban apartment complex. While the couples interact with each other, they come off as awkwardly uninterested despite their close physical proximity. Towards the end of the video, they manage to ease up and are laughing and being affectionate with each other. While Charli sings, “We had a connection, but I’m not the type of girl who wants serious affection. It doesn’t belong in my world,” the video can be seen as a flash forward into the fading away of a romantic connection, and then a flashback to the initial, exciting and passionate first night that she sings about.
