Just in time for International Women’s Day, the work of artist Kristen Visbal poses courageously in the face of Wall Street‘s notorious bronze bull. The Fearless Girl stands in solidarity with the women of the world, representing the relentless courage of all who have resisted acts of injustice and supremacy.
The statue was installed by State Street Global Advisors and placed in the financial heart of the city–perhaps as a call for more women to serve on corporate boards. You can determine for yourself what it represents, however, it’s virtually impossible to ignore the global impact of the youthful figure due to its positioning.
For one, she is strategically placed in front of the charging bull, a figure which attracts thousands of tourists from around the world. Now, as tourists line up to take pictures next to the bull, there’s a new girl in town who’ll demand their attention. This now serves as a global symbol of the power of a woman’s voice in the country, and our fearlessness to argue for our liberties in ways millions of other women cannot.
Much like Elizabeth Jennings Graham and revolutionary women of the past and present, the Fearless Girl’s feet are planted firmly in the city, in an area notoriously dominated by men, the Financial District. Perhaps a sign of change, the girl might showcase the influx of women working towards equanimity in patriarchal industries.
