Sidenote: Listening parties are always a little awkward, you’re meant to preview the person’s album – but normally, most folks just suck the open bar dry while networking. It would be better if it were more intimate…like if there was a giant bed and everyone invited to preview the album could climb on and the artist could be in the center, personally handing you your own headphones and playing each track…you know, like sharing an intimate artsy moment with a close friend or boo. Then again, what do I know?!

Since Violette was about to unveil its New York Collection, it seemed right that we make something that was an homage to New York City. Hence…the Taxi Cab Design. Punctuated by checker print and marigold, these headphones will be sure to get you going!

If there’s any photographer you’ve seen at concerts in NYC over the past few years (primarily hip hop), it’s most likely been Brook Bobbins building up his portfolio and shooting for friends and famous artists alike. The Bronx bred photographer has a knack for connecting with artists and capturing special moments. Although he’s most known for the moments he captures on stage, his special relationship with many musicians allows him to freeze moments in time off the stage as well and share it with excited fans online. His website, who-shot-ya, has a plethora of photo galleries from 2010 until now. It might only be a few years, but the amount of shows and amazing shots he’s got is more than many others get in their lifetime.

Anyone who knows me, knows how much Nas’s album ILLMATIC left an lasting impression on me. The album is everything. I mean, its easily the most thorough and flawless rap album of all time. I’ve stated it in many-a-interview (like here at SMOKINGSECTION.UPROXX.COM) and I’ve been playing the album non-stop ever since I heard it as a youngin’ in the hood of Albany. Hell, I love it so much I may even get hitched to the track “New York State Of Mind”. It is quite simply…perfect.

Yesterday marks the 18th Anniversary of the album and Complex.Com recently posted a well-written article titled “10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT NAS’ ILLMATIC” full of gems that I had no clue about. I highly suggest you check it out.

And since we’re on the topic of the great Nasir, I should mention that while I worked at Def Jam I was honored to work on his project “HIP HOP IS DEAD”. I always say that meeting your idols can be the most terrible thing, because you find out that they’re not super heroes…they have bad days just like everyone else. On top of that, we fantasize about meeting them and put so much on it and have expectations of what they will be like and worse – how they SHOULD act. Like “500 Days of Summer”, when you’re expectations don’t meet reality…you are terribly let down.

Long story short, I was afraid to meet the myth/man/legend…but, when I did…he was, as my friend Karl Justin says, “Sweet as Punch”.

‘I’m just stressing myself out trying to do something amazing,’ Joey BadA$$ tells Mixtape Daily of his upcoming debut mixtape 1999.

As a youngster, Brooklyn MC Joey BadA$$ was baffled by Nas’ 1994 classic Illmatic. The iconic album cover featured a childhood photo of the then 20-year-old God’s Son. “I seen him as a kid and I thought he was a kid rapping, I was just confused,” Joey told Mixtape Daily. After all, how can a kid that young deliver such impactful and insightful records like “Life’s a Bitch” and “The World Is Yours”?

Somewhere along the way, Joey’s initial confusion must have led to some sort of inspiration, because at 17 years old, he has already delivered a single that seems to surpass the subject matter of other spitters in his age bracket. The militant-minded “Survival Tactics,” borrows its instrumental from the 1998 Styles of Beyond song of the same name. Joey impressively starts out spitting, “N—as don’t want war, I’ma Martian with an army of Spartans/ Sparring with a knife in a missile fight.”

The track’s gritty video shows Joey and his partner-in-rhyme Capital STEEZ marching from their grimey Brooklyn hood to Wall Street while wearing animal masks and army jackets. On March 21, MTV News featured Joey on the Get in the Game segment of “RapFix Live.” After previewing a portion of the “Survival Tactics” video, members of Odd Future agreed that Joey “can rap,” even if a disruptive Tyler, the Creator downplayed the quality of the visuals. Expecting some pushback from the renegade group, Joey came out of the gate hurling insults at OF producer Left Brain, and Left Brain fired back. The incident was billed as beef on media websites and message boards, but Joey writes it off merely as playful banter. “I felt like that was set up,” Joey told MTV News. “I felt like y’all tried to set us up for beef.”

Still, it has been all love for Joey, who is currently in his junior year at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. Joey BadA$$ says that he’s been rapping since the womb and credits his parents’ affinity for hip-hop with shaping his musical tastes. “I was 2 years old and I knew the whole Biggie ‘Hypnotize’ song,” he boasted.

Influenced by the likes of the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac, Joey began to take rapping seriously as he got older. Now he is the stand-out among his Progressive Era crew, a collective of 18 rappers, producers, graphic designers and studio engineers. The young man’s buzz even caught the attention of Mac Miller, who featured Joey on “America,” a track off of his recently released Macadelic mixtape.

All this and Joey hasn’t even dropped his first mixtape, though he estimates that 1999 will come shortly. The recent attention has him ready to step up. “Now I feel like I gotta give them something greater,” he said. “I’m just stressing myself out trying to do something amazing.”

I touched down in Los Angeles on Monday around midnight. I would have some time to chill the next day before I would DJ that evening for Hurdler Jason Richardson’s Birthday Party, then I would head back to New York first thing in the morning. It was clear it would be another in and out business trip that would leave me exhausted. I was fine with that, considering I’ve never really had any prolific experiences in LA…BUT, lately I’ve been really eager to explore this mysterious place. I don’t know why, but I’ve always had a hard time connecting with the city that so many of my great friends love or live in. Maybe my time is always too short or maybe all the 80′s/90′s movies I watched as a kid ruined my perception of it. This trip, I actually got to spend some time with New York Local Josh Madden and LA residents Joel Madden and Peter James Lee – it was a lot of fun!

This Hotel was cool. There was a scent flowing throughout that reminded me of a beautiful older black woman who attends church regularly.

Charles Wade actually hit the nail on the head and made sense of my weird analogy  when he said it smelled like there was a salon on the premises.

I met up with Jonny Shipes to go over some work stuff and got some work dates for the Summer in place.

Any of my Danish/German/Norwegian supporters got a couch for me to crash on?! I’ll settle for the floor.

Mothers Milk.

All the rooms in the Redbury were beautiful and massive. I had a living room, kitchen and washer/dryer. When it came time for lights out I was really freaked out. I blame it on my entire lifetime spent in cramped quarters. Being alone in a big space frightens me.

The next morning I awoke super tired, but super stoked to start the day…

Went to hit the gym. I was told it was across the street, but it ended up being 4 blocks away. I was lost for a minute and felt like Vivian from Pretty Woman, walking the block.

When I finally arrived at the address I was told to go to, I was confronted with a Parking Garage.

It took me about 20 minutes to realize that I had to walk into it to get to the gym.

When I got the call that VH1′s new morning show, “Big Morning Buzz Live”, was interested in having me present a sneaker segment…I was more than floored, I was NERVOUS!
