Happy Birthday to our favorite pop and R&B princess, Rihanna! Unapologetically kicking off the Pisces season is our adored icon we look to for style, our next potential twerk or love song–and maybe even the next best way to throw shade.
Rihanna has been in the music game for about 12 years, killing each stage of her evolution as she goes. She started as the Barbadian girl next door and transformed to the Bad Girl RiRi we all adore today. What’s most notable about her evolution is her transparency through it all. She came into who she really is as an artist, making sure that it’s thoroughly displayed through her music. Rihanna has developed an aesthetic that could never be mistaken for anyone else, even if she decided to change gears.
Outside of music, Rihanna has teamed with some of the biggest names in fashion and beauty, such as Mac Cosmetics and Puma, giving us a chance to be just as attitude bearing as she is with her style. She also has a line of amazing perfume that she keeps building on and a stylist agency she launched in 2015 called Fr8me. You can catch her in some acting roles in movies and shows like Battleship, the voice of Tip in Home and most recently, Bates Motel and the upcoming all female casted, Ocean’s 8.
Rihanna also has great philanthropy efforts, always giving back to her fans and the less fortunate through themes of education, mentorship, community work and her annual Diamond Ball.
Just a year ago, she continued to break barriers in mainstream music with her eighth studio album, Anti. Although her fans considered it “snubbed” at the Grammys, this album hit home for this generation of music and became a mark in Rihanna’s career. So, I’ll drink to that!
Today we celebrate a good girl gone bad and the example she sets for millennials: mastering the artistry of creating lanes, going outside the norm and knocking down whoever is blocking her path.
Let’s take a look at her metamorphosis in music over the years!
