Today, January 29th, we celebrate the “Queen of All Media,” Oprah Winfrey! Many know her as an extremely influential and wealthy household name, but not everyone knows how she became the authority that she is today. Poverty, displacement, and abuse were part of Oprah’s upbringing, but she did not allow her circumstances to become a hindrance. Instead, she made full use of her talents and wholeheartedly developed her craft over the years.
As a high school senior, Winfrey worked in radio, was on her school’s speech team, and won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University through an oratory contest. At the age of 19 she became the youngest and the first Black female anchor at WLAC-TV in Nashville. From there, she moved on to other anchor and hosting jobs before landing in Illinois as the new face of AM Chicago. Oprah’s charisma and skill re-birthed the show, making it the highest rated of its kind in the city. It was then renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” (1986-2011) and a legacy began.
As a host, actress, philanthropist, and author, Oprah has been helping people live their best lives for decades. She vowed 2017 to be her “Year of Adventure,” and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for the next 11 months, because honestly, she can do anything. Here are 5 of her most recent feats that can inspire us all to say less, do more, and accomplish our goals this year:
February will mark 200 covers of O Magazine, which has had strong sales since its launch in 2000.
Oprah published her first cookbook on January 3rd, Food, Health, and Happiness: 115 On-Point Recipes for Great Meals and a Better Life.
Food, Health, and Happiness was released under Winfrey’s new publishing imprint, “An Oprah Book,” which debuted this month as well.
Her latest OWN network drama, Queen Sugar, is a hit on pretty much everyone’s scale.
Oprah entered the new year 42 pounds lighter with the help of Weight Watchers, a company that she sits on the board of and has 10 percent ownership in.
Power moves only, and there have been plenty more throughout the years. Check out Oprah’s top 10 memorable moments via MsMojo:
