Viceland has announced its first-ever scripted comedy show titled What Would Diplo Do, starring, written and executively produced by James Van Der Beek.
Described as “Louie meets WorldStar HipHop crossed with This Is Spinal Tap“, the show centers around Van Der Beek who plays a fictionalized version of Grammy-winning musician Diplo. Told through a set of parables, WWDO portrays the DJ as a “guy who can bring 60,000 people to their feet… but kind of sucks one-on-one.”
WWDD stems from A Day In The Life, an online promo for Diplo’s Mad Decent Party which was released last summer. It also starred Van Der Beek, and was produced by the same creative team.
Fans speculated that Van Der Beek had a project in the works after making a random appearance on Viceland‘s popular late-night talk series Desus & Mero back in October. In an interview with Deadline, Van der Beek said, “The show doesn’t take itself too serious but it’s not cynical.”
WWDD will be guided by Viceland co-president Spike Jonze, who oversees the network’s programming slate. Production for the series is set for February and will premiere later this year.
