The Mystery Behind The Man That Is Andre’ Benjamin

André 3000‘s influence as one of the most unique and talented rappers since his prominence in the mid-90s and early 2000s, has left an impact that is unmatched. Always his authentic self, André pushed the limitations and boundaries of what could be allowed in the hip hop/rap scene.

The born and raised “ATLien” played a major role in the 90’s southern Hip-Hop scene as a part of the rap duo Outkast. Outcast consisted of Three Stacks himself as well as rap counterpart, Big Boi. The group was created during their high school years. Shortly after both men graduated, they signed to LaFace Records.

They released their first album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, in 1994. That same year the album went platinum, and the rest was history. The duo went on to record ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia, Big Boi and Dre Present…Outkast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, and Idlewild. All well recognized albums that included hits you probably still listen to today like “Rosa Parks”, “Ms. Jackson”, “The Whole World”, and “Hey Ya”.

As a group, Outkast was known for their blend of Hip-Hop and funk, mixed with Afro-furturistic elements. This was much due to André’s style of delivery and lyricism. His solo work showcases his funkadelic style – whether that be on his own song, like Roses,  or his features on other songs like “International Players Anthem” and “By Design”.

Aside from rapping and producing, André is also an actor. He’s played roles in various feature films such as Families, Be Cool, Battle in Seattle, Four Brothers,  and All is by My Side.

In 2006, Andre played a role in the film Idlewild – the film that him Big Boi created together alongside Bryan Barber. That same year, André’s cartoon, Class of 3000 about an award-winning musician who goes back to his alma mater in Atlanta in order to teach music, premiered on Cartoon Network.

Recently with his many appearances on albums like Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Kid Cudi’s Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ (or his fantastic feature on Divine Council’s “Decemba”) fans are pushing for a new solo project from André 3000. But according to his long time friend Chris Rock, an album from the legendary artist is still up in the air. Check out some classic André lyrics down below.
