This week, our VashtieDotCom playlist is going to take you to the heart of Houston, Texas, where Chopped and Screwed production is key and where queen Bey first laid her head. We’re sure Bey is playing her own music to her newborn twins, but we’re going to show love to her home town with their signature production sound, chopped and screwed, that puts a new spin on our favorite tracks.
Chopped and screwed is a technique of remixing commonly hip hop and R&B tracks to a slowed down version. This style hit the Houston hip hop scene in the early 1990s and is still used today to remix our favorite radio hits. This style is accomplished by slowing down the tempo of the song to between 60 to 70 quarter-note beats per minute and also adding effects like record scratching and stop-time to give the full chopped-up feel of the original song. Thanks to DJ Screw, we can now enjoy this style of music as we ride out in this summer’s heat. This week’s playlist includes a few of our favorite tracks chopped and screwed from Future, Tory Lanez, Drake, J.Cole, Migos and more. Press play!
