FLASHBACK: ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’

You cannot mention Hip-Hop without mentioning Ms. Lauryn Hill. We were first introduced to the songstress and MC back in the 90s when she was apart of the legendary group The Fugees. The rap group put out their first album Blunted on Reality in 1994.

In 1996, the group released their most critically acclaimed project The Score that sold over 17 million copies, making them the highest selling rap group of all time. After the release of that project, they toured around the world and soon split into their own individual lanes of artistry.

In 1998, Ms.Hill  released an album that would inspire a generation of artists entitled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (featuring singles “Lost Ones” ,“Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and [the most notable] “To Zion”) sold more than 19 million copies worldwide, earned the singer five Grammys, three American Music Awards, a Billboard Award, a Soul Train Award and an MTV Music Award and released MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002.

Not only was she the first person to ever receive a Grammy for a hip-hop album but as she stepped away from the stoplight, she opened doors for so many artists like Kehlani, J.Cole, Talib Kwele, Kanye West, Nas, John Legend, J.Cole, Fabolous, Method Man, and so many more.

These days we can thankfully catch the legend performing at upcoming festivals like Soundset Festival (along with Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, Talib Kweli, and many more ) as well as One Love Festival (w/ Wale, Rza from the Wu-tang Clan, Anderson.Paak, Migos and more). Not only can you catch her partiking in musical festivities but you can also catch her iconic album as an archive in the library of Harvard(selected by 9th Wonder) along with Nas’ Illmatic, A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly. Thanks to Ms.Lauryn Hill, hip-hop will always have a voice.
