#SelfcareSunday: Take a CureStigma Quiz for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It serves as a reminder to not only address any mental health concerns that you may have, but to also think about ways you may be able to assist someone in your life that suffers from an illness. Here are a few facts about mental illness that The National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI) just posted for it’s CureStigma campaign:

– 1 in 5 American adults and children will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime.
– Stigma may not directly affect you, but it prevents the 1 in 5 Americans with mental health conditions from seeking help.
– 75% of all chronic mental health conditions begin by the age of 24.

In an effort to remove stigmas surrounding mental illness, NAMI created the CureStigma quiz. It’s a short three question quiz that can show you if you have subconscious biases about mental illness. The road to diagnosis and treatment is much easier when a person has friends, co-workers and family that are supportive of his or her journey. Addressing our personal biases will help create an environment where those around us feel confident enough to talk about their symptoms and take action to address them.

Taraji P. Henson, Sterling Brown and DeWanda Wise are a few of the celebrities promoting NAMI’s campaign.

The quiz is available at curestigma.org.
