Recently singer Summer Walker who just dropped her debut album “Over It” canceled many of her remaining tour dates. She posted a candid video to her 1.7 million followers explaining how touring doesn’t work well with her introverted personality.

“I really hope that people respect that I’m a person, I have feelings. I get tired, I get sad and it’s a lot. I don’t want to lose myself for someone else.” – Summer Walker

The title of her tour “My First and Last Tour” foreshadows Summer’s feelings on the tour experience. People on Twitter have spoken out about Summer’s live performance presence and even her meet and greets. There is often this question posed, “If Summer has social anxiety, why be an entertainer in the industry?”

Summer openly admits to dealing with social anxiety and it is commendable. Instead of hiding it she is aware and vulnerable on the topic which can help shape a new industry that promotes safety and health for an artist instead of exploitation which can help lead to downfall. Mental health awareness is on an all-time high. The idolization of musicians creates stress and expectations, the audience has to respect the artist’s space. Summer has stated she created music as a space for her to express herself comfortably in a one on one with Ari Lenox. That experience can be intimate and personal for her versus performing live can be exhausting for someone who identifies as an empath or introvert.

For those who are disappointed by Summer’s cancellation can still support by purchasing merch and streaming her music. As a musician she has done all we need which is create and release music, not all musicians focus on touring. There are also many online content platforms that host live performances that Summer can team up with to give fans a different approaches to her music. Check her out on NPRs Tiny Desk Concert series. We are excited to see how Summer will maneuver through her social anxiety and stand by her decisions. The importance of mental health in pop culture can help build a better society and we hope more celebrities speak out!
