#WomanCrushWednesday: Björk

You already know what today is, it’s #WomanCrushWednesday. On Wednesdays, we like to highlight some of our favorite ladies and today we are shedding light on Björk. Björk is Vashtie’s all-time favorite artist. She is an iconic singer-songwriter and actress from Iceland.

Björk is an experimental creative force. She is forever evolving, transitioning and breaking artistic and societal boundaries in music and fashion. Born on November 21st, 2016 and raised by her mother Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir and who was an environmental activist. She grew up in a musical household and was heavily influenced by her surroundings. Her upbringing led her to releasing her first album at 11 years old. The album was a compilation of traditional Icelandic folk songs.

Eventually, she went on to being apart of punk band called the Sugarcanes. This was her introduction to the world. She brought what she would describe as “matriarch energy” to electronic beats. Their most noteworthy single was “Birthday” which became a hit on the indie scene in the UK and the US. In 1993 she emerged as a solo artist with her first album entitled Debut and in 1995 she released Post.

Instantly, the media labeled her as some type of  “pixie” pop artist although that was not who she was. She wanted to define herself and her career and began to change her artistic direction with the 1997 album Homogenic. With this album, she took on an innovative and experimental persona and went on to release Vespertine and Medulla. Over the next 40 years, her eclectic musical style was influenced by electronic, pop, experimental, classical, IDM, hip-hop, and avant-garde. She worked with different artists from a variety of disciplines and her art went beyond the music with the exploration of multimedia projects.

Named one of the most influential people in the world in 2015 by Times Magazine, Björk crushed her industry with her extreme innovation and creative approach to making music. Several of her albums have reached the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart and she has won five Brit Awards. Her work is a full-on experience and it is completely her own. Salute to our girl Björk for inspiring us to always be fearless in our artistic expression. Because of her we know that there are no limits to what one can create when they are their authentic self.
