This past weekend Intersessions, a series of DJ workshops curated by and for girls, femme people, non-binary, queer individuals and more, hosted their second event at the Serato headquarters located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The session was instructed and led by trap-specialist, Shy Daughter, Harlem’s own DJ Chiinky, producer and DJ HD, and DJ Ohaileigh. Each of the instructors shared tips on DJing professionally and their perspectives on being women in the music industry.
Each instructor detailed their preferred equipment set-up and broke down in detail the process of DJing an event from set-list conception to day-of necessities including quarter-inch attachments for headphones and RCAs. These ladies not only shared their knowledge on a range of DJing software from Serato to Rekordbox, but also allowed for attendees to practice on top-notch equipment provided by Serato. The five-hour workshop was intimate with fifteen attendees, which allowed for one-on-one time for some of the attendees. The mission of the Intersessions is to educate and share resources surrounding DJinf for individuals that are underrepresented in the music industry and they are well on their way to building an empowered community in NYC. The Serato team also held a small raffle for the attendees gifting Serato apparel and 50%-discount vouchers.
