The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards were the most entertaining award show we’ve seen in a while with a night of outstanding performances from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Future and more. With a promise of four on-stage appearances from Rihanna and four uncensored minutes from Kanye West we had no idea what we would see. Below we share five of the night’s highlights (besides the performances of course).
1. Beyoncé’s Red Carpet Statement and Knockout Lemonade Performance
Beyonce walked the red carpet with her daughter Blue Ivy, the cast from her visual album, Lemonade, and the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Oscar Grant III. This was a powerful and uplifting moment for the black community after a summer of unfortunate losses due to police violence.
She also slayed a flawless performance of Lemonade, which featured “Sorry” and “Formation”.
2. Rihanna’s Four Performances + Vanguard Award Recipient
At the age of 28, Rihanna was awarded the Michael Jackson Vanguard award and stepped on the stage to perform an unprecedented four times with each one being better than the last. She performed a string of medleys featuring some of her certified hits. Watch all four of the performances here.
3. Kanye West’s speech and Teyanna Taylor in the “Fade” Music Video
Kanye West was given four unscripted minutes from MTV to talk about whatever he pleased. He shared his ideas on fame, the recent police violence that has plagued America, and names his role models in no particular order. After shouting out his ex, Amber Rose, and Chance the Rapper who he calls “the future” he debuted the video for “Fade” off of his latest studio release. The visual stars G.O.O.D. music first lady, Teyana Taylor, dancing feverishly showcasing her toned body and wicked moves.

4. Michael Phelps says that Future is “The Most Inspiring Rapper”
Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian to ever compete, revealed that the song he was listening to in this hilarious meme is a track from Future’s 2015 release Dirty Sprite 2, “Stick Talk”. Phelps went on to call Future the most “inspiring rapper” and attributes part of his focus to his music. The #FUTUREHIVE of course were besides themselves.
5. Drake introduces Rihanna with endearing speech to present Vanguard Award
Drake says that he’s been in love with her since he was 22 and that she has managed to not only be successful but stay true to herself throughout her career. We couldn’t help but melt at his sincerity and giggle at Rihanna’s coy smiles. But all things aside, what Rihanna has managed to accomplish in her eleven years as an artist is truly remarkable.
