If you’ve never expanded your music taste on a global scale, you might want to reconsider with this female-centric K-pop group on the rise. The South Korean group BlackPink, was created by YG Entertainment and consists of lead vocalist (Jisoo), the main rapper (Jennie), main dancer/ rapper (Lisa) and lead dancer/main vocalist (Rosé). Their music style is heavily influenced by Trap and Pop elements, which leaves them with this unique and uptempo discography.
The group made their first breakthrough into the Korean music scene Summer’16 with their album, Square One. This included two single hits, “Whistle” and “Boombayah”, produced by Korean-American songwriter and producer Teddy Park. “Boombayah” was their first number-one hit on the Billboard World Digitals Songs chart, and as of last year, they hold the record for highest-charting K-pop act on Billboard Hot 100 & 200.
BlackPink spent 2018 pushing fire singles and an EP which led to them signing a global partnership with U.S. label Interscope Records/ Universal, having never sung one song in English. The states are slowly but surely catching on to this rapid success, as the quartet is scheduled to perform at Day 1 of the Coachella 2019 music festival.
If you are foreign to the K-pop music scene or even a veteran, be sure to give this powerhouse group a listen.
