The Disc Jockey is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects in the music industry. They run the show, keep the crowd hype, and ultimately are the commanders of the ship. Back when Hip Hop was just emerging, DJ’s were mainly thought of as men. It wasn’t until DJ Kool Herc took in DJ Wanda Dee as his protégé that the world was introduced to a female DJ in the Hip Hop world. Since then there have been some big names like DJ Spinderella and more. Now it is 2017 and here are a few women DJs that deserve recognition.
DJ Quiana Parks
Quiana Parks is a DJ from NYC that started DJing after a bad break during her mid-twenties. She specializes in disco, pop, house, hip-hop, and R&B. Something astonishing about Parks is that she is in a 10-year Lymphoma cancer survivor and her experience pushed her to start the DJ for a Cure initiative event. The event helps to raise awareness for blood cancer and places an emphasis on the importance of donating bone marrow to better provide the black community with matches.
Along with her passion for community service and DJing, she is also a part of the UnDone Project which is a visual art collection of her portraits that have been featured at Art Basel in Miami 2015. Parks is a DJ but that isn’t the only thing that defines who she is…she is also a visual artist, social-influencer, cancer survivor, and more.
Kathleen Taylor is known by her DJ name DJ K-Sly and based out of Los Angeles. DJ K-Sly has worked on major radio stations such as KKBT 100.3 The Beat in Los Angeles and WHTA Hot 107.9 (formerly Hot 97.5) in Atlanta. She has also appeared as a DJ and announcer/host on TV shows such as Dance 360 and Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge.
In 2009, K-Sly released a remix album titled The Outkasts! which featured a full album of remixed Outkast songs and was her first introduction into music production.
Of course, there is Vashtie Kola. Vashtie grew up in Albany, NY and is now based in Brooklyn. Vashtie has DJed for a multitude of companies being Bape., Jordan, Stussy, Coach and many more. What separates her from the rest of DJ’s is her versatility when it comes to the kind of music she specializes in.
Not only does Vashtie DJ but she also is a director, model, creative director, and much more. She was the first female to design her own Jordan shoe and started a clothing line that carters to her tomboy style, violettenewyork.com. Vashtie is more than just a DJ. She is an artist.
