The art of being a Disc Jockey requires a ton of fearlessness, perseverance, and consistency. For a woman in that field, it requires even more. In the early stages of Hip-Hop, there were a few female DJ’s who paved the way for the many we admire today. One of those women is DJ Spinderella.
Born as Diedra Roper on August 3, 1971, DJ Spinderella is a native to Brooklyn, and all things Hip-Hop. As a child of the 70’s her early influence in music began with a keen fascination with her father’s record collection. By the age of 16, Spinderella had fallen in love with DJing and began learning what she could from those around her. With her dreams in mind, she began spinning at numerous events in Brooklyn.
Soon after, she was approached by a classmate who would catapult her career and change her life forever. At the age of 16, she became apart of Salt-N-Peppa and would be known as their official DJ. The trio would eventually go on to be one of the most successful female Hip-Hop groups of all time. Along with being their official DJ, Spinderella also produced countless songs on Salt-N-Peppa’s albums which many of, became platinum and gold singles.
Spinderella was known for sampling on her turntables. She knew just how to wow her audience with old and new music. Getting the crowd hyped up is no easy task, but that never stopped her from doing so. In addition to DJing and producing, she also spent time rapping and acting in films.
