When I saw that Princess Nokia was releasing a mixtape I was excited. I’m a fan of her spirit, her being and how she carries herself in the midst of the rap game. She doesn’t carry the typical “female rapper” persona and it reflects in her music, specially A Girl Cried Red. Here, she shows a softer side, but still packs a punch. Princess Nokia dives in deep to rock influences as she sits at a fast food joint in a striped long-sleeve with metal bracelets on. She calls it “alternative.” It’s a touch of emo blended in with hip hop, she describes to The Fader. “It’s real alternative music,” says Nokia. The project sits at eight singles full sing-songy raps on mellow rock influenced beats giving us a breath of fresh air from what’s currently offered in today’s rap.
