Its undeinable that we’re a fan of Janelle Monae’s creative work. From how she displays her art in visuals, to what she stands for, to her music, we can’t get enough. Earlier this year, we dove deep into her new releases and why it sounds a lot like Prince and how her teasers kept our eyeballs glued to our phones. Today she blessed us with a visual for PYNK and the internet is going nuts.
The video directed by Emma Westenberg allows the mind to interpret the video in several different ways, just how the lyrics do. Monae dressed in all pink, riding around in a pink classic car, in a pink desert, with pink lipgloss plays on the title of the song gives us many uses for the pigment, but we can dive a bit deeper.
“PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere… PYNK is where the future is born,” sings Monae while she opens and closes her vulva shaped legs right before Tessa Thompson pops out between them. While Thompson plays Monae’s love interest throughout the visual, it isn’t the only homoerotic mention along with a few politically correct “grabs back” panties. Not to mention, the video features all women, plenty of booty cheeks and a glimpse of two tongues touching, given a perfect end to Pride Month in March.
