Last week, rumors surfaced on the interwebs that SoundCloud reduced their sound quality, resulting in thousands of songs, DJ mixes, and podcasts to be altered from their original uploaded state. According to these reports, the streaming service went from using a 128kbps MP3 format to a (much lower) 64kbps mp3 format.
We all know that in the age of social media, it’s harder for corporations to get away with things they may have in the past without being called out. Although Soundcloud has denied all claims, New Jersey-based producer, @DirectOfficial, took to Twitter to not only express his frustrations but prove that the streaming service may not be telling the complete truth:
Last year, SoundCloud was close to becoming a thing of the past when they were forced to lay off 40% of their employees and close two of their offices due to lack of funds. However, an emergency 169.5 million dollar investment and hiring a new CEO helped save their ship from sinking completely. People are speculating that the decrease in audio quality is what will help Soundcloud stay afloat, ultimately saving them money. Even though the future of SoundCloud seems to be uncertain, numerous DJ’s, talk show hosts, and music artists rely on this streaming service to share their content daily. Many of today’s top artists have gotten their start off of SoundCloud streams such as Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yatchy, and Playboi Carti. Can this change in quality have the power take away from an up-and-coming artist’s chances of making it big? Or will SoundCloud renew its high-quality audio and restore faith back into the youth… I guess only time will tell! For now, check out some of Vashtie’s DJ mixes on her SoundCloud and tell us if you can hear the difference in quality.
