The Obama’s are making a jump from politics to informational entertainment. Our favorite presidential couple has officially signed a development deal with Netflix where they will be producing films and TV shows for the streaming service. Rumors began to brew back in March about the deal stating that Michelle and Barack would be creating content that surrounded their social interests but the content will, in fact, be about the people of America. Obama opened up about the news at a tech conference in Las Vegas (via Business Insider):
“We want to tell stories. This [Netflix deal] becomes a platform. We are interested in lifting people up and identifying people doing amazing work. We did this in the White House. For instance, the very first-time Lin-Manuel Miranda performed the first song in Hamilton was at the White House at a poetry slam we did.” – Barack Obama
Obama and Michelle are no stranger to being in front of the camera. The two have captured our hearts with their personal stories and that is what has inspired them to tell the stories of others. He went on to say:
“[I imagine we’ll produce stories] we think are important, and lift up and identify talent, that can amplify the connections between all of us. I continue to believe that if we are hearing each other’s stories and recognizing ourselves in each other, then our democracy works. We are all human. I know this sounds trite, and yet, right now globally, we have competing narratives.”
The Obamas will produce scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features that ultimately highlight issues and themes the president pursued during his eight years in office. Who’s ready to Netflix and chill with The Obamas?!
