Aside from being recognized for his raw lyricism and Nas’ new prodigy, Dave East is now a part of the legendary roster that is Def Jam Records. The Harlem lyricist discussed still being a part of Mass Appeal Records and Nas executive producing his album with Power 105’s The Breakfast Club this past Thursday morning. With the buzzing emcee’s upcoming independent release Kairi Chanel dropping today, the world can expect to get familiar with a fresh new face that’s needed in Hip-hop. Here are five facts you should know about Harlem’s rising star, Dave East:
1. He originally planned on going to the NBA
Dave East wasn’t only focused on rap during his early years. Writing rhymes was something that came second nature for him but during his years at Townson University, he got to play basketball with the likes of Kevin Durant.
“I decided to take rap dead serious once I got locked up and the basketball dream wasn’t really looking [good anymore]. I always wanted to do something I knew I could love to wake up and do every day, and rap was just second nature to me, growing up in Harlem” – Dave East, MTV Interview
2. Fatherhood changed his life.
During his sit down with The Breakfast Club, Dave East revealed that since the birth of his daughter, he has been more conscious of what he does and says, thus he admits to having a filter: “ I can still have fun, but it gotta have a filter to it because I’m a father now.”
3. His latest visual is a storytelling track about a brown skin beauty name “Keisha”
This time around, the Harlem native brings a storytelling flavor to his artistry that offers a breath of fresh air. It’s clear that Dave East is a student of the game.
4. He’s a part of the XXL Freshman 2016 class
His classmates include G Herbo, Kodak Black, Lil Uzi Vert, & Anderson paak.
5. Kairi Chanel is named after his daughter
Aside from being named after his first born, Dave East is releasing the follow up to his project Hate Me Now today. Entitled Kairi Chanel, the release features Beanie Sigel, Cam’Ron, Fabolous & more. “I feel it is my best work to date. I named it after my daughter, because she’s the greatest and most defining moment of my life. Everything I’ve done up until now has led me to her, so I translated that into music”, says East.
