Black History Month Highlight: Lovebug Starski

Kevin Smith (May 16, 1960 – February 8, 2018), best known by his stage name Lovebug Starski, was a respected MC, musician, record producer, and DJ. Aside from his name being mentioned in the lyrics of iconic musicians such as the Notorious B.I.G, Lovebug was also known for being widely credited with coining a term that is used almost every day. “Hip-Hop.”

As a native of the Bronx, along with other Hip-Hop pioneers, he was an important member of the 1970’s scene that birthed the genre. According to Lovebug himself, he first used the term at a party in the 70’s and would continue using it at the other parties he DJ’ed. In 1979, the single “Rappers Delight” by Sugar Hill Gang was released, popularizing the term while also becoming the first “modern” Hip-Hop recording. Although Lovebug wasn’t rapping on the single himself, the famous opening lyrics are credited to him:

“I said a hip hop
Hippie to the hippie
The hip, hip a hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it out
Bubba to the bang bang boogie, boobie to the boogie
To the rhythm of the boogie the beat..”

Lovebug Starski was known amongst his peers as not only a Pioneer but a multi-faceted man in Hip-Hop, and one of the firsts at that. Public Enemy’s Chuck D told Hip-HopDX that Lovebug “DJ’ed for great MC’s and MC’ed for great DJ’s. He took his street records into the recording world.”

Kevin Smith a.k.a Lovebug Starski will always be remembered as an innovator in the world of Hip-Hop. Without his achievements, it’s safe to say that the world of Rap music would be a different place. May the legendary Lovebug Rest in Peace.
