How Does It Feel?: The 16th Anniversary of Voodoo

DAngelo

Sixteen years later, D’angelo still has us captured with Voodoo. During this transitional time for R&B, D’angelo followed up and super-exceeded our expectations from his first album, Brown Sugar, solidifying his mark in this game forever. From track to track he flowed seamlessly, blending hip-hop, funk and soul showing another spectrum of neo-soul. The four year gap was absolutely worth it. This album is Brown Sugar deconstructed, instrumentally, lyrically, and emotionally.

Voodoo was birthed from writers block, having children, living life to experience growth and a dissatisfaction with the way music was turning more into a commodity in the late 1990’s. When he  released the unbelievably sexy video for “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” he was overwhelmed and upset at the commercial impact of it. He then became the sex symbol, the naked dude, instead of the dude who can capture your soul and attention with his music, which caused him to go on another hiatus. But while he didn’t like the impact, 95% of the world appreciated his craft of triggering the imagination.

Although we thought D’angelo wouldn’t return to continue the saga of Voodoo, we should’ve learned that hiatuses does him and the fans good. Fourteen years after Voodoo, Black Messiah came as a surprise and gave us what we all needed. There are rumors circulating that there is another album in the works. But we have to learn to be patient and watch and see what happens!

Meanwhile, let’s jump into the time machine and get into some lyrics from Voodoo that got us into our feelings!:

You can’t disguise your emotions
You know that I see in your eyes
You soul’s in me, your soul’s somethin that I feel inside
Run, run, run, run, if I run Lord only knows how far that I and I
Will fall behind
Gotta find a better place, find a better space
So that I, so my life may be the one reason why – “Send it On”

She done worked a root, root, root
In the name of love and war took my shield and sword
From the pit of the bottom, that knows no floor
Like the rain to the dirt, from the vine to the wine
From the Alpha to creation, to the end of time – “The Root”

Don’t get confused about it
Just try to do your thing
Cause in the end
Got to know just how to play the game
I search for answers often
I paid the price for many
Still long for happiness, not promised to the plenty
But I’ve got to go on

Good days, bad days, halfway days
Good times, bad times, halfway times
Good days, bad days, halfway days
But I’m still looking for a great day in the morning – “Medley: Greatdayndamornin’/ Booty”

I know you got someone to…, I got somebody too
But I’m unhappy and I miss the shit we used to do
I miss your smile, your mouth, your laughter, baby
Never bumped into your kind before or after

And I wondered all this time ’bout how you been
And I hoped by chance I’d see you once again
I’d love to kiss your lips, baby, once again
I’d love to hold you tight, girl, one mo’ gin – “One Mo’ Gin”

Girl it’s only you
Have it your way
And if you want you can decide
That if you’ll have me
I can provide everything that you desire
Said if you get a feeling
Feeling that I am feeling
Won’t you come closer to me baby
You’ve already got me right where you want me baby
I just wanna be your man – “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”
