‘All Hail The Queen’: 5 Ways Queen Latifah Continues To Inspire Women

Whether suited up in her Queen attire, acting out the life of a 20-something-year-old or doing a campaign for Covergirl, Queen Latifah has always been an icon. Although she puts on for the urban culture, she specifically puts on for women of the culture. In the late 80’s, she blazed into a male dominated industry, demanding respect for not only herself, but for all her sisters. Queen Latifah is the pioneer that Hip-Hop needed–especially in the late ’80s and early ’90s–to pave the way for the other bold women in Hip-Hop who came after her. She wasn’t honored at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors for nothing!

Currently starring as Carlotta Brown in the new hit Fox television series, Star, this pioneer continues to set the bar high by being a constant inspiration for women. In 1995, she received a Grammy for her hit, “U.N.I.T.Y,” — asking, “Who you calling a bitch?”–and making sure women always remember to accept nothing less than the utmost respect. Being fearless and motivational is beyond her career; it’s in everything that she does and stands for. Whether she’s intending to or not, nothing she’s done has ever been in vain and is always meant to empower women. This is why we love her so!

Check out 5 lessons Queen Latifah has taught us while continuing to inspire women daily:

Don’t be afraid to be multi-talented: Not only has Queen Latifah nailed seven albums ranging in the genres of rap, r&b, and jazz, she’s also acted in over two dozen shows and movies! Although she’s appeared in shows and movies like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and HairSpray, her most notable roles are Khadijah in Living Single and her role as Cleo in Set it Off.

Today, you can expect to see her in the new, upcoming rom-com Girls Trip, starring Jada Pinkett, Regina Hall, Larenz Tate and more! Let’s not forget she has also hosted her own daytime television show–where she constantly highlighted amazing people, celebrity or not, and of course honored women.

Be Versatile. Do What You Want! Being multi-talented absolutely requires some versatility. Queen Latifah has mastered the art of this since day one! She is the epitome of a renaissance woman. From style choice to talent, Queen Latifah has never let society or hold her back from doing anything. What a way to live!

Be yourself. Always stay true to you: One thing that anyone can say about this Queen, is throughout the years she’s always been a  fearless person. She manages to remain humble and selfless after all her accomplishment through her career. Her ability to remain humble after demanding respect from a male dominated industry is perhaps the most notable! She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and make sure she meant what she said when she sang, “Ladies First.”

Handle your business: Queen Latifah has been about her business since she stepped on the scene. You could only expect that from someone with Queen in their name. She’s also been an ambassador for many companies, including Jenny Craig. But her most notable business venture is as brand ambassador for CoverGirl. She broke down barriers with this achievement because, as always, she made sure that her sisters of color were included and respected. Queen Latifah’s CoverGirl Queen Collection, makes sure that every shade of brown has great and affordable make up!

Always encourage other women: If one thing is for certain, it’s that no one can absolutely do everything alone. Throughout her career, whether the conversation was being had or not, Queen Latifah made sure that women and their respect were not neglected. She’s encouraged and empowered other women near and far and continues to do so even in the most subtle ways. Us women keep each other strong. Mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters and friends, let’s keep Queen Latifah’s legacy going by continuing to embrace, empower and motivate each other because we are our sister’s keeper!
