Activist, poet, and R&B singer Jamila Woods is deemed to be one of 2016’s most promising break out stars. The Chicago native first won over the world when she appeared of Chance The Rapper‘s hit single “Sunday Candy, following up with a guest appearance on Macklemore’s controversial “White Privilege” track.
Now, this leading lady is ready to step into her own spot light and delivers her first full length 13-track effort, HEAVN. The new album speaks of her love for her hometown Chicago, self love, and her growth as a black woman in today’s world:
“HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in,” Woods expresses in a press release. “I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.”
With production from Peter Cottontale, oddCouple, Nate Fox, Carter Lang, & Jus Love, among others. Chance the Rapper, Saba, Donnie Trumpet, NoName Gypsy, and Lorine Chia, this album is sure to hit your soul.
