Met Gala Fashion Faves: Past & Present

Beyonce wearing Ricardo Tisci in 2015.

Annually, celebrity A-listers flood New York City for The Met Gala.  To most people it looks like prom night for celebrities but The Met Gala has a deeper purpose.  The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute a black-tie affair which means that EVERYONE looks their best for the evening and the parties that follow.

What makes the event interesting are the themes; each year there is a different theme which inspires some of the dresses and suits that are worn on that night.  Below are a few of out favorite looks from The Met Gala along with the designer and theme of that year.

First, the theme for 2015 was “China, Through the Looking Glass;” and Beyonce (pictured above) interpreted the theme for her own with a dress designed by Ricardo Tisci during his time with Givenchy.  Personally, I love when a person takes skin tone into account when dressing themselves and I can tell that Bey probably mentioned the tone of her skin when picking the dress.  It compliments the dress very well and I’m sure Hov couldn’t take his eyes off of her during the Gala.

Lady Gaga during the 2015 Met Gala

Secondly, that same night in 2015 Lady Gaga took the theme to a whole new level.  Her dress embodied the theme the most.  Although it wasn’t the best, Gaga’s inspiration behind the dress had to be from a Shoalin seeing the cut of the dress and her sleeves.  She made this look her own and I applaud her for it.

January Jones wearing Versace.

In 2012, actress January Jones grabbed everyone’s attention when she stepped out in an amazing yellow Versace gown.  It’s very simple and her necklace really compliments the dress well.  No handbag, or bracelets made everyone focus on her and the dress, which was a great move.  The color yellow is slowly making a comeback and Gladly, we can now appreciate the color of the dress and how it looks great on any type of skin.

FKA twigs wearing Versce.

“Fashion in An Age of Technology.”  Everyone was excited when 2016’s theme was announced.  Most came with custom pieces from their favorite designers but FKA twigs’ dress was the best in my opinion.  She looks great, the length of the dress and the height of the slit is what makes the dress as well as the top half.  Her headpiece and rings are what grabbed my attention off the bat.  I love Twigs for what she does in the music world but her fashion taste isn’t going unnoticed either.

Kim and Kanye in Givenchy

Personally, I love floral patterns and all black Italian cut suits.  Kanye and Kim kept everything simple in 2013 during the “Punk” theme but it all came together.  Kim’s dress is what I want to focus on, the floral print hides her pregnancy well and again, looks great with her skin tone.  Ye’s simple black Givenchy tux looks great with the print of her dress.  It’s safe to say that personally this is my favorite look from The Met Gala that I’ve seen.

Sarah Jessica Parker in 1995.

Lastly, Actress Sarah Jessica Parker has made multiple headlines with her Met dresses and gowns….ands suits.  Every year the media look out for her because they know she is going to go all out for the event, (seriously, google her dresses).  I wanted to show the dress that started it all though; her first Met Gala in 1995.  A simple black gown with no accessories looks great on her.  Similar to Jessica Jones above, the lack of jewelry makes you focus on the gown and only the gown.  I love it.

Your favorite celebrities are looking to wow the fashion world and leave an impact on the Gala the same way these individuals have.  This year’s Met Gala took place last night, below we have listed a few of our favorites from the event.
