Using natural toothpaste wasn’t on the top of my list of things to do but here I was buying a tube from the Duane Reade around the corner of my job. I am usually a Crest kind of person but after doing some reading I could see why natural toothpaste was a better choice. According to the alternative daily a lot of toothpaste has sodium lauryl sulfate which helps toothpaste to foam but can interfere with the functioning of our taste buds. A lot of our favorite toothpaste contains artificial sweeteners and flavors, for example artic blast is not a natural flavor. Artificial flavors and sweeteners have been linked to an increased risk in metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Fluoride, which is in a lot of our toothpaste, does not have a good rep. It has been linked to many studies to brain damage, lower IQ in children, hyperactivity, bone cancer, genetic damage, and other side effects. There is a bunch more reasons why you should consider switching to natural toothpaste, but I won’t scare you too much.
I walked to the toothpaste and toothbrush aisle with not much hope. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they did sell natural toothpaste at Duane Reade. However, I was very disappointed that I only had one brand to choose from. I ended up going home with a tube of Tom’s of Maine peppermint flavored fluoride free antiplaque and whitening toothpaste. After opening the tube I was relieved that it looked like regular toothpaste. I went through my usual morning routine that included brushing my teeth before getting into the shower. As I brushed I noticed the toothpaste didn’t get as foamy as my usual Crest toothpaste. I also took note that the peppermint flavor wasn’t as overpowering like I was used to. The peppermint flavor was there but it didn’t seem as lasting, for example I could have stepped out the shower and drank orange juice and not want to slap myself immediately. But on the plus side my teeth did feel clean and I couldn’t stop running my tongue over my teeth through out my day. I even went as far as encouraging my mother to use the toothpaste as well, and according to her it felt fine.
As much as I would like to share with you all that I am fully invested in using natural toothpaste, I am not. I am going to finish out this tube and hope for the best. Personally I prefer a more lasting taste, but I’m sure that has a lot to do with my many years of not using natural toothpaste.
