Kaash Paige is turning ears with her honest lyrics and unique sound. Listening to her debut it’s not hard to catch the intimate moments and vulnerability that sparked the title of her EP, Parked Car Convos. The project name, a reflection of Kaash’s realistic outlook, has a literal meaning. The intimate conversation and honest moments that happen in a parked car, whether with friends or lovers are almost never forgotten. That component of authenticity or realness is just one of the ways Kaash Paige is different than your average R&B songstress.
When you think of R&B you’re probably not thinking Texas, but incidentally, Kaash was. Watching her dad record in his closet studio as a kid inspired Kaash to give her passion a try but in her own way. Mixing sounds and lyrics we’ve come to love from Houston rappers with words of love, loneliness and heartache were Kaash’s way of staying true to herself and the music of her city. Lofi sounds with a hazy feel set the tone for Parked Car Convos as Kaash lightly croons about crushes turned to love, fake friendships and relationships gone bad. The melodrama stories atop electronic and slowed down beats feel more emo and current than dissonant and deliver a message of acceptance with ease.
Kaash is all about being open and clear. Her honest reflections and accounts of queer relationships are relative to all relationships including friends and family. There is even a message in her name, Kaash being an acronym that stands for Kill-All-Arrogance-Stop-Hatred. Be yourself and sing the words of your truth is the motto uplifted by the singer and is evident on many of the Eps tracks. Though she found mainstream success through Tik-Tok, her spot in R&B has been claimed and her influence solidified. If Parked Car Convos is the start it will be exciting to see what comes next. This time of artist abundance can be brutal for new artists but Kaash is definitely one to keep an eye on. Watch her explain her breakout song “Love Songs” below.
