It’s safe to say winter is gone for good. As we continue to box last season’s infinity scarves and sweaters in exchange for sundresses–and soon–short shorts and mini skirts, it’s also time reassess the health of our skin.
After months of hibernation, perhaps you’ve participated in a few rounds of “No-Shave November,” but don’t fret! With warmer weather approaching, it’s important we remember to protect our bodies from harmful UV rays and other environmental factors–as well as incorporate exfoliation into our skin routine. Exfoliating removes dry, dull, and dead skin cells which keeps your pores from becoming clogged.
We shed about 0.001 – 0.003 ounces of skin flakes every hour. This sounds almost like nothing, but it’s roughly 0.024 – 0.072 ounces per day and 9-27 oz./year, or 0.55 – 1.6 pounds per year ! That when you double layered those winter leggings, except you’re stacking a new layer day by day and wearing them all year long.
Sugar scrubs are one of the easiest exfoliation methods you can make right from the comfort of your home. If you’re feeling a bit extra, you can enrich your scrub by adding a drop or two of essential oils. Oils have differing properties depending on what you’re looking to improve. For example, chamomile and rosemary oil contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidants agents, jojoba and argan oil are great to stay moisturized and sandalwood. Peppermint helps promote circulation.
Our girl Vashtie is all about health-conscious, non-carcinogenic, vegan and cruelty free beauty, so here are some quick DIY sugar scrubs:
Moisturizing Body Scrub:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shea butter
3 TBSP olive oil
3 TBSP coconut oil (melted, but not hot)
Citrus & Coconut Body Scrub:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup organic virgin coconut oil
Option 1: 1 tablespoon citrus fruit zest (grapefruit, lemon or orange etc.)
Option 2: 1/2 teaspoon, 50 drops, of citrus essential oil (organic grapefruit, lemon, or orange)
Relaxing Vanilla & Lavender Facial Sugar Scrub:
1 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp real vanilla extract
1/2 cup almond oil
1/2 tsp Vitamin E oil
15 drops lavender essential oil
Combine your ingredients, stir well and be sure to store in a glass container (essential oils will damage the plastic and metals change the properties of the oils). The best part about homemade sugar scrubs is that you can make it in bundles and gift them to your friends for as a last minute birthday present !
