Culture II: A Taste of how Migos are Evolving

If you didn’t think Migos were already super stars, their moves from this month alone may change your mind. In the beginning of last week, the latest  issue of Rolling Stone came out and guess who covered it ? Yes, Migos. Following up the the trio’s published discussion of money, musical success, kush, and ambition, the culture’s rap rockstars released their third studio album Culture II.

Amongst the group’s latest project, there were 24 tracks with features from Gucci Mane,Travis Scott, Post Malone, Ty Dolla $ign, Drake (who referenced Vashtie on “Walk It Talk It”), and 2 Chainz. The group first put out Culture I on January 27th (one day after of this year’s  release) and you can tell on this album that Migos are not afraid to do what’s unexpected. A lot of the tracks that were on the album from “Narcos” to “Made Men” to “Notice Me” with Post Malone and many others, tapped into sounds that we’re typically not used to Migos utilizing. This album is definitely a project where we get to see the trio step out of their comfort zone, pull from a little bit of everything, and allow us to witness how the trio has evolved as rappers and as overall artists.

Sometimes when something works for artists, we seem them consistently put out the same content and not tap into anything that could shake up their likability, but Migos are apart of a different direction. Even with all their commercial success(from the #1 hits, the streaming success, to the Rap Snacks to the YRN clothing line and the Donald Glover shout out to them on the Golden Globes), one thing this group does not do is get comfortable and that’s why we love them. They’re taking risks and growing as people and as artists, and it reflects that in this album. Some of the producers amongst their latest masterpiece include Quavo ,Pharrell, Kanye West (who helped produce “BBO (Bad B*tches Only), Metro Boomin, Murda Beatz, Zaytoven, DJ Durel (who helped produced 10 tracks on the project), Wheezy (who often works with the likes of Young Thug and Shad da God), Buddha Bless, DA Honorable C.N.O.T.E, and many more.

One of the most talked about songs on this album already is  a song you can now expect to hear on an Apple’s iPhone X commercial, at your local club, or a strip club like Blue Flame or Magic City, is “Stir Fry.” Not only is Stir Fry just an ill and catchy song in itself, but the song utilizes a beat that Pharrell made 10 years ago. In addition to the production, the trio recently released a visual for the track and guess who is apart of the roundtable for the culture? The dynamic duo, Pharrell and Nigo. Once I peeped them,  that moment in itself was  one of those “aha” moments for me personally because those two still hold  a very huge impact on the culture of music to fashion today. Aside from the roundtable of culture contributors within the video, Migos defeated their enemies with some roundhouse kicks and action packed self defense moves, all in some fly Tai Chi suits.
