Whether you refer to him as Childish Gambino or Donald Glover, you know that our boy is always creating something new. The question at this point would be what can he not do? From his third studio album, the Grammy-nominated Awaken, My Love, which was considered by many to be Donald’s most daring and adventurous project yet, to his compelling TV show on FX, Atlanta, Donald Glover is living proof that you can really do it all.
Being that Donald Glover is literally everywhere nowadays, it’s hard not to questions how he became this much of a renaissance man at only 34. He first came to attention for his work with Derrick Comedy while a student at New York University and, with the help of Tina Fey, was hired at the age of 23 to become a writer for the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. He later portrayed community college student, Troy Barnes, on the NBC sitcom Community.
As mentioned earlier, He currently stars in the FX series Atlanta, which he also created and occasionally directs. For his work on Atlanta, Donald has won various accolades, including Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy.
In addition to on the Television screen, you can also find Donald in film and theatre. Over the years, he’s had major roles in Magic Mike XXL (2015), The Martian (2015), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) as Aaron Davis, and has been casted as the young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. He will also play the voice of Simba in the remake of Disney film, The Lion King in 2019.
It doesn’t stop there for Donald. After several self-released albums and mixtapes, he signed to Glassnote Records in 2011. He then released his first album, Camp, on November 15, 2011 to positive reviews. His second studio album, Because the Internet, was released on December 10, 2013. Donald was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2015, Best Rap Album for Because the Internet and Best Rap Performance for his single “3005”. His third album, “Awaken, My Love!” was released on December 2, 2016, producing the hit single “Redbone”, which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. At this year’s Grammy Award show, Glover was nominated for five Awards, including Album of the Year for “Awaken, My Love!” and Record of the Year for “Redbone,” eventually winning the award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Donald recently signed a record deal with RCA, which left fans curious to know what his next project will look and sound like. To our surprise, Donald informed us that this next album will surely be his last. When asked about this claim of closing the Childish Gambino saga, he remained a man of his word:
“I stand by that,” he explained. “I mean, I’m really appreciative of this, and I’m still making another project just right now…But I like endings. I think they’re important for progress. I think like, if a lot of things had like “Death Clauses” in them, we wouldn’t have a lot of problems in the world, to be honest. So I think endings are good cause they force things to get better.”
It seems like music may be something he’ll put on the backburner for now, but fans still have a new season of Atlanta to look forward to along with the upcoming Lion King remake where he will be a co-star to James Earl Jones, and Seth Rogan, and Beyoncé (OMG). There is no doubting Donald’s talent and creativity whether is it on screen, on stage, or even behind the turntables (Yup, he’s also a Disc Jockey that goes my mc DJ). As a fan of Donald Glover, Childish Gambino and mc DJ, I am siked to see what else he has up his sleeve or what special talents he’ll surprise us with next!
