Film Friday: Jordan Peele Approves UCLA Class based on “Get Out”

If you’re seeking some higher education on “the sunken place” look no further, UCLA has got you covered..

Jordan Peele’s four-time Oscar-nominated film Get Out was released on February 24th, 2017 and is still receiving tons of attention to this day. This movie has been classified as a satire, thriller, horror and even a comedy that tells a wild tale of a white woman who takes her Black boyfriend home for the first time, only for him to find some disturbing discoveries.

Get Out has sparked so much conversation that UCLA Professors Tananarive Due and her husband Steve Barnes were inspired to make Jordan’s box office hit into a formal class named “The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival and Black Horror Aesthetic”. When Jordan Peele heard the news, he took it upon himself to visit the campus and surprise students with a Q&A about the film. He also gave his stamp of approval and some insight on his purpose behind making such a controversial movie.

The class (that’s also available online) touches on “conversations that are happening now in 2018 concerning race that have never been happening in the history of this country, thanks to Get Out,” professor Tananarive Due said. “There is an opening for artists right now. If you’re willing to speak a dangerous truth, and you’ve got the skill to do it right, there is real opportunity.”

“The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival and Black Horror Aesthetic” will analyze how Black people are portrayed in films as “being the monsters in Birth of a Nation to being the ones who fight the monsters,” Professor Barnes added, when asked about the purpose of the class.

For those of us who aren’t lucky enough to access UCLA’s campus or live in different states, the online version is available to those who are simply seeking the knowledge. Would you be interested in taking this class? Let us know below!
