Happy Birthday Jam Master J, Gone But Never Forgotten

Jason William Mizell better known as Jam Master J paved the way for not only DJ’s but most importantly was responsible for breaking the hip hop scene into mainstream culture. At the age of 14, JMJ started Djing around Queens, NY and helped established the legendary trio RUN DMC in 1981. During their time as a group, they sold 230 million records world-wide, popularized the fundamental elements of Hip-Hop, and were the first rap group to have an album certified gold (which turned into certified platinum) .

Aside from multiple group accomplishments, the Dj created JMJ Records brining on acts like Onyx, mentored artists like 50 cent (before signing onto Shady/Aftermath) ,constantly kept his ears to the streets,  and embraced and supported any new talent on the scene. In 2002, Jam Master Jay found the Scratch DJ Academy in Manhattan to “provide unparalleled education and access to the art form of the DJ and producer”, and was listed #10 on Spin’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Unfortunately that same year, the icon who was only 37 years old was shot in his studio in Queens.  Fifteen years later, the murder has still yet to be solved. There’s no doubt that JMJ will forever have an inerasable impact in Hip-Hop and on the culture of music as a whole. Although he was gone too soon, he will never be forgotten.
