#KicksOfTheDay: 5 “Ugly” Sneakers Worth The Buy

You’ve probably been hearing a lot lately about the “ugly sneaker” trend. It’s the current obsession with bulky soles, sometimes a sock-like upper. The origin of these sneakers date back to the 80s/90s dad, your favorite lunch lady, or the infamous nerd. Their are theories behind their reigning return from our new obsession with comfortable dressing or the possible democratization of fashion? Whatever the reason, they are certainly a hit this season and will likely be for a while. Here are the five ugly sneakers we think are actually worth buying.

1) The Aristocrat

It can not get any uglier than this. The Vetements x Reebox collab has definitely created a sneaker that checks all the marks of an ugly sneaker. This faux suede and leather trainer even has velcro straps and black smudging throughout to give it the ultimate ugly effect. While I would argue if the price tag is actually worth it or not, for $990 my advice is to really fall in love with it.

2) The Wallet-Friendly

Some of us are rather budget-conscious and that is okay! It might not be the time for you to splurge on this trend, but nonetheless you can still be a part of it. Zara offers a few deviations of the ugly shoe, but these are our favorites.

3) The OGs

We can’t discuss this trend without taking it back to the originals. The New Balance 990 is set to make a promising comeback this season as we move to the luxe-comfort look. The original running shoe has seen many iterations along the years, but nothing beats the classic models.

4) The Classic Twist

We took it all the way back with these. The Air Max CB ’94 are not only perfect for this trend, but also pays homage to basketball culture, with a special fixation on the golden era of the sport.

5) The Must-Haves

The Acne Studios Manhattan trainer is enough “ugly”, yet subtle to wear these as often as you like. With strong influence from the 90s sportswear scene, these trainers come in beige, white, or black.
