Leomie Anderson: Feminism and Streetwear

We’ve heard it all in 2017; from Donald Trump’s many sexist remarks to Russian leaders approving the “Slapping Law” that causes less punishment for domestic violence and lastly to many powerful men being taken down for sexual assault. Yet in the midst of all of this, there are young, trailblazing women like Leomie Anderson, who are using their platforms to empower and give voices to women around the world.

When we hear the word “Streetwear” we usually think of giants like Supreme, The Hundreds, Billionaire Boys Club and more. But rarely do we think of feminism and streetwear together…until now.

In 2017, UK-born Super Model, Leomie Anderson, launched LAPP The Brand (Leomie Anderson the Project the Purpose). It is a streetwear brand focusing specifically on the rights and problems of the 21st century girl. “The aim was to make girls feel proud and confident to say no to situations they don’t feel comfortable in and remove the negative misogyny around women denying men their bodies, something Anderson feels too many young girls fall victim to” (LAPPthebrand.com) This brand also includes an online platform at TheLAPPtheBrand.com that features articles concerning fashion, sex, health, politics and global perspectives.

As a woman of color, Leomie recognizes the hardships that many young women face on a daily basis. Many of her pieces focus on the problems of consent and saying NO to unwanted sexual advances. These T-shirts and hoodies display phrases such as “This P***y Grabs Back”, “My Body, My Rules”, “Lol Nah” and more. Many of you might recognize the “This P***y Grabs Back” hoodie from when Rihanna wore it to the 2017 Women’s March in January. Her newest collection features a LAPP Track Logo One Piece. This red and white jumpsuit’s design includes recognizable logos with a twist. The Gatorade “G” logo with the words “Girl Power” underneath and even the Toys R Us logo changed to “Girls R Us”.

Overall Leomie is taking control, not only in streetwear and fashion but also in the fight for women’s rights. She exemplifies Black Girl Magic to the fullest. It’s exciting to see this brand blossom and grow. We are totally here for it!
