Music Festival Roundup: The Most Promising and Music-Centric Festivals this Spring

It’s that time of the year again. The time where you wake up at the crack of dawn to eat a granola bar washed down by a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. The only time of the year besides Halloween where you can actually get away with wearing a costume. And the only place where it is acceptable to take a minimum of 3 naps in public. No, we’re not talking about a college tailgate, we’re talking about MUSIC FESTIVAL SZN.

From the outfits to the party favors, to connecting with complete strangers over the common denominator of music, there’s definitely a reason why 32 million people participate in going to music festivals each year. Given the rise of attendees, there has also been a rise in festivals…good and bad (ie. Fyre Dest). No worries tho, we’ve cut all the clutter for you and have put together a list of the most promising and music-centric festivals this year.

If you’re looking for a festival with a balance of both hype, turn-up music, and soul-centric music then Roots Picnic is definitely the event for you. In The Root’s hometown of Philadelphia on Saturday, May 30th, the legendary group will be bringing a variety of talented acts to the city.  From Meek Mill, to Snoh Alegra, to even SIR. This lineup truly has something for everybody. There will even be a showcase for all the soul-loving 90’s babies featuring Brandy, SWV, and Musiq Soulchild. Oh and if you’re into podcasts, there’s something for you too. The “Questlove Supreme” podcast in addition to the hilarious “The Read” podcast will also be there. And if that’s not enough, Dussepolooza will be in attendance. So please get ready to get your aunty/uncle on with a glass of Dusse while swaying to “Don’t Mess With My Man”. FRANK OCEAN. That’s it. That’s the description. No but really, if that doesn’t make you want to spend your tax refund on a roundtrip to Palm Springs maybe the other headliners like Travis Scott and Rage Against the Machine will do it for you. In addition to the highly anticipated headliners, other acts such as Lana Del Rey, BROCKHAMPTON, Roddy Rich, FKA Twigs, DaBaby, and Summer Walker will be taking front stage. The festival will take place in Palm Springs on April 10th-12th and 17th-19th and will be available via live stream on YouTube Premium See the full line up here

A music festival curated by Pharrell, featuring Pharell “and friends”,  AND located on the beach?!?! Honestly what else could you ask for? For Something in the Water’s 2nd annual festival in Virginia Beach, April 20th-26th, they are planning to give attendees a week they’ll never forget. With a line up featuring ASAP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, Playboi Carti, and Rico Nasty, this is definitely a festival for the ragers. See the full line up here.

What’s better than a summer in New York? A summer where you get to see Tame Impala, Solange, Missy Elliot, and Stevie Nicks all in the same weekend. This year Governors Ball will be taking place June 5th-7th in NYC. In addition to the iconic, heavy-hitters some of our favorite acts like Princess Nokia, Kota the Friend, and H.E.R. will also be providing the vibes. See the full lineup here.

This collective of showcases may be overlooked by the masses but real music junkies know what’s up. SXSW, which takes place in Austin, Texas from March 13th-March 22nd. serves somewhat as an industry incubator. This is the hub of all of your favorite indie, upcoming, and still on the rise artists. Since the festival is made up of multiple big and small showcases, it is literally a one of a kind festival experience. You could be raging in a sea people or you could be up-close, vibing face-to-face with an artist. Some of the most talented acts such as Smino and even Kendrick Lamar have graced an SXSW stage. Last year’s acts included Megan Thee Stallion, Queen Key, Lil Gotit, and Omar Apollo. See official artist and showcase information here
